POST/POP to release new MENSWE@R single “CRASH” on May 26th – PREORDER NOW!

PREORDER NOW – http://postpoprecords.bandcamp.com/album/crash

You know that situation? That situation when you are idly walking along the dusty rails of a long-forgotten Ghost Train ride, and you find a hastily ripped up love-letter that has the faint odour of Christmas Crackers, and as you read the tale of unrequited love between a girl and the concept of Love itself, you decide that from this moment, you will make it your life mission to find this girl and show her via MS Paint that she was right all along, that LOVE really does exist… and that’s when you realise; it’s you. You are the girl. You wrote this letter on a train to Hastings, to distract yourself from the job you hate and the friends that nod and the gentleman sitting next to you who is filling Sudoku squares with co-ordinates to who-knows-where, and now you are here. In the Ghost Train. Alone, but laughing in a Ghost Train. But you are happy and you know you can never leave the ghost train now, but why would you want to because all of your friends have just shown up and they are calling your name, and the guy from the train to Hastings is also here and then at last, the personification of the concept of LOVE turns up and it knows your name and when you go to give it a hug, it smells like Summer AND Cherry Coke. You know that situation? I do. That’s how I feel about releasing “CRASH” the brand new single from Menswe@r and their first for 18 years.

I will be writing a lot more about it in the next couple of months, but just wanted to give you all a heads up of that fact it is happening! The new single is released on multiple formats on May 26th and you will be able to pre-order the Ltd Edition vinyl and cassette tape on POST/POP (and Rough Trade) very very soon.

On March 26th I went to their sold out gig at The Bush Hall in London and was met with lots of posters with the POST/POP logo on (I like this. I want this to happen more often) and here it is…

There’s going to be lots of noise on the Menswe@r “comeback” and that’s fair enough. I am incredibly happy that they are releasing new music, and the new material previewed at Bush Hall is possibly the best stuff Mr Johnny Dean has ever written in my opinion. I won’t bore everyone with BRITPOP 101 save to say that Menswe@r are one of the first bands you think about when you hear that word. If you need to know anything else then use these links!

I have a feeling I’m going to be writing about Menswe@r a lot, so know that you’ll see a music video and some more gigs announced soon.

So that date again, MAY 26TH – THE NEW SINGLE “CRASH” FROM MENSWEAR. PREORDER NOW: http://postpoprecords.bandcamp.com/album/crash

SUBMIT SONGS FOR “ADVENTURES IN HOME TAPING: VOL 2”!

It’s almost time for POST/POP’s most eagerly awaited release so far… “ADVENTURES IN HOME TAPING”

In case you haven’t heard about The Most Ambitious Tape Release For 30 Years, let me bring you up to speed. In collaboration with Reddit’s r/cassetteculture, I chose the best 26 bands that frequent this tape-friendly subreddit, and put them in an order that will nicely compliment the theme of the album… ADVENTURE! It was originally called “Choose Your Own Adventure” but Chooseco threatened me with legal action, so I changed it. We also had to change the art work, but everyone agrees it has turned out even better! The album is professionally recorded onto high quality RED cassettes and comes with a short story to read along with the music. It’s written by me, so you might actually forget there is music playing as you will be so involved in the story – but I have tested it and if you read it at a regular pace, it will be the exact right length of the tape. It’s very interactive and there will be times during the story where you will have to make decisions that you might find unusual at first, but please go with it! Anyway, we have sold a lot of these albums via pre-order, so when it is released on March 26th, you will need to act fast if you want to buy one!

With this in mind, I have already started to formulate “Adventures In Home Taping: Vol 2” (provisional title!) and this time I am going to feature 52 bands. “52 bands you say, Jed? On tape? But that’s impossible!” I really didn’t like turning down bands, and since this album was announced, I have come across dozens of amazing bands on r/cassetteculture which could have featured… so I am going to feature the best 52 bands out of the 100s on there.

If you are in a band and want to be on “Adventures In Home Taping: Vol 2”, here is what you need to do:

1: You need to register on r/cassetteculture. If you haven’t already, go to: http://www.reddit.com/r/cassetteculture and sign up. It takes 2 seconds. What is it? It’s a forum where people talk about tapes a lot and is filled with the most dedicated, amazing little bands that seem to all be on the verge of being great. Every genre/subgenre is catered for. If you’re into hip-hop, noise, experimental, pop and everything inbetween, you’ll find a good home. I am making this a prerequisite because this is a TAPE ALBUM and this is a very good step in keeping cassette culture thriving so we can make more albums like this.

2: Make a few posts. You don’t have to set the world on fire, but y’know say something.

3: Send me your very best song! We have a dedicated email: RCCCompilation@gmail.com so send it to that.

4: Ideally, don’t send me lots of emails with a song on each. Send me your best one or two in one email otherwise it might get lost. Mark it something like “Adventures in Home Taping: Vol 2”. ANY genre is accepted but I am a big sucker for a chorus. People don’t write choruses anymore. I blame Injured Fox.

5: Thats it! What happens next is I will listen to every single song sent to me and let you know at some point between now and the end of May if your song is going on the album.

6: WHATS THE DEADLINE? There is NO deadline. As soon as I get 52 bands/songs I love, I will announce the line up on POST/POP and R/Cassetteculture.

7: If your band gets on, you’ll receive semi-regular emails, including answering some interview questions (see the ones we have done for Vol 1, they are great!) and also for any little things you need. Your suggestions are very very welcome. The bands involved can choose the colour of the tapes, how we present it, artwork, etc.

And that’s it! I also want to include a few special items with Vol 2, including ltd edition packs of cards. As there are 52 bands and 52 cards, I will get a few custom made decks produced, with each card representing the bands. If people like it, then maybe ill get more made!

POST/POP has an exciting few months before all this happens, so please spread the word and if you like great new music, jelly red tapes and interactive adventure stories, spend £3 (yes only £3!!!) on Adventure in Home Taping; Vol 1! —

ADVENTURES IN HOME TAPING: MEET THE BANDS – HAPPY HILL

Welcome to the latest spotlight on one of the 26 bands/artists that will appear on the POST/POP vs Cassette Culture Collaboration Compilation. I aim to have one of these interviews every single day so by the time we release the album at the end of March you will know each band intimately! Next up is HAPPY HILL! The track on the album is called “I Believe in Ghosts” and it sounds like it was recorded by a hipster-poltergeist, two fingers underwater with a czech tape recorder sellotaped to a broken kazoo. My kinda jam. Let’s see what the band have to say for themselves…

Hello! You are one of the 26 bands chosen for the POST/POP X CassetteCulture compilation. Congrats and thank you for letting me use your song. Just so everyone can know a little about you, who are you?

We’re Happy Hill, a 2 person band that is split up on the west and the east, Brandon William and Adrian Lacasse, Brandon having made this song. We never have a full band playing, we record each instrument one at a time and play off each other.

Where are you from? Somewhere exotic? Are there any nice record shops there?

L.A. and Boston, some nice record shops in Boston and Northampton.

What genre would you pigeonhole yourself into? Y’know, if I had a gun to your head! (There’s a slim chance that in the future I may have to point a gun to your head due to sleepwalking)

We have many different sounds, most fall into lofi-psychedelic or spacey pop.

I’m bored of bands telling the world what their musical influences are SO, what are your non-musical influences? (people, movies, art etc)

Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch, the forest, psychedelics, meditation, social masks, feeling vibrations from people, clueless people, Miyazaki, dreams, harsh wilderness, the fall, summer dusk, Terrence McKenna

How did you find out about this collaboration/compilation and what made you send me your songs?

Went on reddit for the first time in a year and found the post about it, and the last two times we were about to release on tape it fell through.

You are in a dusty room. Time hangs heavy in the air. Before you is an ancient table, carved from a twisted tree that once stood proudly atop a lost mountain. Upon this great table is a gilded envelope. You open the envelope slowly, knowing that it will give you the answer that you have been waiting for ever since you started this journey. You have lost many friends and gained untold enemies along the way. All for this. This moment. You carefully remove the parchment, feeling the edges until it draws blood. You notice not, as your eyes flicker across the page. Your blind companion, so loyal, even though you traded his eyes for safe passage and a mixtape, brings his ear close to your lips and asks you the question. “What did the letter say?” and your answer is……

Cutting down that tree for this table was a terrible idea.

Do you listen to tapes yourself? Do you think there’s a future for the format?

I listen to tapes often, and was introduced to the medium by the Radiator Collective, who released everything on tape and I loved the sound.  There is a huge future for the format just because it sounds good.  Some people will always appreciate that.  Even George Harrison said he preferred a bit of tape hiss. It’s like film, it adds a natural texture to the sound, even if the song was digital originally.  And I love the way tape compression sounds.

What’s the one thing people should know about you before they listen to your track?

I came up with the chorus for this song right after a ghost encounter, my girlfriend told me that her aunts house was haunted by a non-threatening ghost.  I couldn’t really believe it till I experienced it myself and then I heard the sound of a chair moving across a wooden floor in the the room above us.  I went to check it out because I didn’t think anyone was home, and there was no one up there and the floor was covered in rug.  There was also only one way in and out of the room and I was at the bottom the whole time before.  As I walked down the stairs I heard whispering behind me.  I was really scared at first, but then I felt a calm as I realized that at least I knew ghosts were real now.

What’s the one thing people should know after they listen to your track?

This song is from a tape I am working on that is embracing and poking fun at the resurgence of 50’s and 60’s pop style sounds in underground music, with it’s main influences being France and the Freemansons and Dirty Beaches.

Thanks Happy Hill! Read more interview from the bands on ‘Adventures in Home Taping’ below and buy the tape out on March 26th! (thats really soon!)

Adventures in Home Taping: Meet The Bands – Tremolo Ghosts

Welcome to the latest spotlight on one of the 26 bands/artists that will appear on the POST/POP vs Cassette Culture Collaboration Compilation. I aim to have one of these interviews every single day so by the time we release the album at the end of March you will know each band initmately! Next up is TREMOLO GHOSTS! I chose their track “Eventually America” for this album because it reminded me of a Welsh interpretation of The Mountain Goats. Yes, Owen Chambers (only member of Tremolo Ghosts) represents South Wales in this frankly incredible mish-mash album of styles and sounds. Here’s what he has to say..

Hello! You are one of the 26 bands chosen for the POST/POP X CassetteCulture compilation. Congrats and thank you for letting me use your song. Just so everyone can know a little about you, who are you?

Hello! I am Tremolo Ghosts. Just me. So really the plural is a little unnecessary isn’t it?

Where are you from? Somewhere exotic? Are there any nice record shops there?

I am from the mysterious and garishly exotic town of Swansea in South Wales. On a less sarcastic note it does have one absolutely fantastic record shop called Derricks that seems to have never left the mid-70s and is always playing Deep Purple and Rainbow. Despite the range of truly bizarre throwbacks and oddities they have in there, the best thing about it are the little yellow papers bags that they give you to put your purchases in. It looks like something you might hide a beercan in over in the United States

What genre would you pigeonhole yourself into? Y’know, if I had a gun to your head! (There’s a slim chance that in the future I may have to point a gun to your head due to sleepwalking)

Well the particular pigeon hole that I’m currently flying into would be a sort of lo-fi Americana but very Welsh. So Welshicana? Is that a thing?

I’m bored of bands telling the world what their musical influences are SO, what are your non-musical influences? (people, movies, art etc)

This is the kind of question that you really have to stroke your beard to (if you have one). I get a lot from books really. I’ve just finished reading Tove Jansson’s “The Summer Book” which is as funny, moving and curious as they come. I get very mistrustful of people who can read books but don’t read. They’re up to something…something boring and sinister.

Is that a boring answer? I can say I get a lot of influence from crazy-paving or the Egyptian sun god Ra if that will help?

How did you find out about this collaboration/compilation and what made you send me your songs?

My ever diligent housemate and frequent musical co-conspirator Charlie told me about it. He always seem to know about this sort of thing whilst I always seem to pass them blindly by. He’s in a terrifying one band punk folk band called New Bedlam Asylum which you should defiantly listen to. Apart from the usually starry eyed wonder of possibility, the thing that made me send off a song would be the killer artwork you have for this compilation. Seriously it’s awesome.

Blimey I must have been on quite the quest. I’m glad I found the lost mountain with my sense of direction. Also I’m not too sure how much parchment feeling it takes to draw blood but I’m sure that it’s too much. I guess my answer to my blind companion’s question would be: “Dude, I am so sorry about your eyes! This parchment just contains a recipe for tacos so in reflection was probably not worth it.”

Do you listen to tapes yourself? Do you think there’s a future for the format?

I listen to tapes all of the time! Although bereft of a Walkman as I am, I have to cuddle up to the gargantuan tape player that’s sitting in my front room if I want to hear one but that’s part of the charm. I think their future defiantly lies in the world of DIY. Put simply, it’s cheaper and easier for a band to record a tape than a CD (digital recording is a different matter altogether) and you can make the artwork for a tape look wonderful with just a scrawly biro!

What’s the one thing people should know about you before they listen to your track?

Please ignore the count in at the start. It’s completely different to the actual time signature of the track so it’s a bit pointless….. A countdown is just something you have to do occasionally like a tax return or defrosting the freezer

What’s the one thing people should know after they listen to your track?

It was a real trial to record for me…..I have tiny, freakish mole hands so finger picking is a constant uphill struggle. I swear a horse could finger pick better than me….

Thank you Owen! Apologies for constantly misspelling your band name, but I find vowels are pretty interchangable without too much loss of life… anyway take a look at the interviews with some of the other bands on the album below. You can also preorder this gargantuan album too. Demand – based on preorders – is extremely high and I have had to quadruple the amount of tapes I usually make. I know people say it alot, but this one WILL go really fast.

Kestrels – Limited Edition Cassette (PXP004) Released March 15th

I know what you’re thinking. A POST/POP release and its not by a pretty girl with long eyelashes looking downwards? YES! Thats right. POST/POP’s 4th release comes from Canada’s very own KESTRELS! I tried to make them all pose wearing long eyelashes  – and to their credit, they tried it, but they couldn’t do the looking down thing, so we went with a massive moon instead.

kestrels2

Now, everything I ever learnt about Canada comes from 2 things:

1: ‘Due South’, the 90s cop show about a Canadian mountie that gets posted to a Chicago police force. With this in mind I assume that the members of Kestrels are good at tracking and are extremely polite to criminals.

2: My experience of going to Montreal, nobody being able to speak English to me (or didn’t want to) and Arcade Fire NOT meeting me at the airport riding on a moose. At montreal airport (oddly bigger than the city of Montreal – I am not kidding about this, look on wikipedia) they asked me if I was there for “business or pleasure”. When I said “pleasure” they answered “are you sure?”.

To me, this is Canada. The land of people who dont expect anyone to actually like them, but don’t really care either way as they have amazing healthcare, quality of living and the monopoly on incredible bands. One of these bands is KESTRELS and I am happy to announce that a Ltd Edition Tape of TWO brand new tracks will be available from March 15th 2014 on this very site.

this is their bio from their site but you are welcome to pretend I wrote it – http://www.kestrels.ca/Bio/

I got to see them live when they popped over to London to support Ash a couple of years back (was it that long ago?!) and played the Camden Barfly as a warm-up. I remember thinking that I had known the lead singer Chad Peck for about a million years as “the guy in Canada who knew lots about Ash and had rare stuff” so it was weird finding out he was a living breathing person in a band that I really liked. It was at that point I thought “One day I will release a tape for this band with a big moon on the cover” and that my friends is exactly what I’m doing.

ADVENTURES IN HOME TAPING (FORMERLY CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE) RELEASED MARCH 26TH

SO, I came back from the Weezer Cruise (it was incred btw) and found an email in my inbox instructing me to kindly stop using the name and likeness of the CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURES books. I can understand why they would threaten legal action against a little tape label. I would be scared too. I still love them though. ALOT. Those books kept my imagination fertile and has much to do with the person I am today. It introduced me to all manner of magical things and taught me that uncertainty is the key to making a story interesting.

So let’s make the story interesting.

I put it to the bands involved in this album what we should rename it and there were many great suggestions but the most popular was actually the first one I gave as an alternative…

ADVENTURES IN HOME TAPING.

SO we had a name but the artwork was unusable now. What to do? MAKE IT BETTER. So I spoke to one of my favourite illustrators. The guy I wrote a children’s book with. A guy who is into all the same stuff I am, but has the major difference of being American! I said “Keith, I’m being threatened with legal action by one of my childhood staples. Can you help?” Keith replied “Fuck Punky Brewster Jed, Fuck her. I mean, that one 3-part episode where she met all those monsters in that cave was pretty cool, but don’t let her mess with you. Fuck Punky Brewster“. When I explained to him that it wasn’t Punky Brewster and let him calm down for an hour, I explained the situation. Through red eyes and tear-stained cheeks, he said “I think I can help you out on your quest” and sent me this…

choose
click on image to see it close-up!

It was Norm from our kid’s book! Our ultimate embodiment of adventure. I added all the tape stuff like credits and titles and my howling wolf logo and a few little flourishes and now we have a tape cover again!

ALL THE SAME BANDS. ALL OF THE SAME SONGS. SAME RELEASE DATE OF MARCH 26TH.

It’s time we blazed our own trail, r/cassetteculture. The adventure begins now!

No Cars – “YOKO EATS WHALES” Limited Edition Cassette Album (PXP003) Released Feb 26th

Before you read on, take a look at this video to see what we are dealing with here…

Complete and utter madness. And I love them. NO CARS are my first foray into J-Pop  (I’m also releasing a tape for internet and daytime TV sensation Beckii Cruel later this year too) and I am so so excited. They are 3 girls from Tokyo (via Hackney) who are one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen.

I’d first come across them when my friend’s band was playing some dive in London and I got there a little late. by this time No Cars had already played but their name hung heavy in the air. I heard so many stories about their live performances. I heard they had a song about Tuna Fish. I heard they made an audience member join them onstage and wear a kimono. I heard they gave out kazoos so people could join in. I heard they jumped around in the crowd and sang songs from the middle about an Octopus. Quite frankly I had heard enough by this stage and it was quite quite clear that we were dealing with THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME.

A japanese girl band doing j-pop meets delta blues with audience participation and costumes, hits most of my buttons. Over the next couple of years, I’d see them play quite often, and my intitial reaction proved close to the mark. Here were a bunch of ladies, fully embracing the stereotype that the western world had appointed them, and shoved it down our fat faces with tales of adventure and mystery.

So, I invited them on my radio show and you can hear it all again here: http://www.phoenixfm.com/2013/02/17/the-jed-shepherd-show-ft-japanese-girl-band-no-cars/

Yes, they made me sing their theme song with them. Yes, I think I pulled it off. No I won’t be in your band.

I loved them so much, I even bought the same guitar as Haruna because she made it cool. Taking all this into account, they were the obvious choice to release a tape for. They loved the idea, so what we have is their debut album on cassette for the first time ever!

nocars

BUY IT HERE NOW! (POSTED AFTER FEB 26TH)

Here is the digital version which you can buy direct from the band, have a listen and then come back to buy a tape!

this will be the third POST/POP release and I think it’s becoming something really really special and I hope you have liked everything I’ve released so far! It’s going really well and it looks set to be an incredible year. I have so many great new bands I feel very lucky, but so are you as you get to hear them!

Thanks,

SPOTLIGHT: HETTIE’s Tape SOLD OUT – Here’s what you missed…

So PXP001 aka the Just They Way tape from Hettie is all sold out (original tape post here!). I made 50 baby-pink tapes and they are all gone (save for a few at Rough Trade NYC and 1 forever held at The British Library. The lucky few of you are currently in possession of this hopefully soon to be legendary tape, and I’m sure by now you want to know a little more about Hettie. Well she is 16 from Littlehampton and she goes to BIMM which is that music college in Brighton that basically creates pop stars. In this post I am going to give you all the info I can and by the time Hettie releases her next record, you will presumably be able to relate more to her lyrics. as you’ll know her!

Okay so let’s start with how I know her. Hettie came on my radio show on Phoenix 98FM (www.phoenixfm.com) in September 2013. She wasn’t meant to be on my show, but another presenter had left the station and she was scheduled to be on his show… so she ended up on mine. FATE! Usually I am a little cautious when this sorta thing happens as I like to pick the bands that appear on my show, myself, that way there is some quality control, but I sometimes it all just works out. Hettie came in and we made a horrible tasting smoothie, on the previous presenter’s show as she needed 2 volunteers. That was a good introduction to just how bad Hettie is at making smoothies. I now know to never to accept a drink from Hettie as it will taste like pond water 🙂 My show was up next and below you can hear the audio and see some videos from it! The audio is 2 hours long so listen to this in the bath or something 🙂

audio here

great huh? So that was my intro to Hettie and her music. She obviously has something special, so I got my friend Kenny Lee – who has been in approx 1 million bands – to remix the original version of Just The Way and that’s what you hear on the single!

We then decided to film more videos as the ones above came out really well so I went to Brighton (btw Brighton, your arcades have gone downhill in the last decade, sort that out please) and filmed the videos you see below:

this is “bad blood” and this particular video got 250k+ views on Vube.com. We filmed it in one take!

an acoustic version of “just the way”. I persuaded the nervous looking carny guy to let us jump into his booth and film. His boss walked past so thats why you can see him biting his nail as he was about to get sacked.

this one is called “cut me off” and its quite a sad little song, but Hettie isn’t always so emo!

We did a few more but I am making that into a little documentary at some point. Oh we took tons of photos too. Hettie is modelling the amazing sunglasses/3D glasses from Ingri:Dahl in alot of these photos. If you want them too, go to http://www.ingridahl.com as they are amazing supporters of Hettie’s music and just lovely people to boot!

Not too shabby with a camera if I do say so myself! You are welcome to use any of  the photos above for any articles or to just generally show to people! So what happened next? Well Hettie came on my show again in December 2013. This is a XMAS themed video! By now, I was very much into getting a cool looking vid, even from a live recording….

I absolutely love this song.  It’s called No Guarantee but you ARE guaranteed to enjoy it.

I first heard No Guarantee when in bed, half asleep I got a text from Hettie syaing “I made a little song, dont know if it’s any good, I’ll send it to you if you want…’ So through hazy dreams, I replied “okay” and drifted back into Nod. The phone in my hand buzzed to wake me up and I had a text with an attachment. I pressed play and closed my eyes again. I listened and then when it had finished I listened again. I was now wide awake. “Hettie you do realise this is the best song ever right?” I text back. She didn’t realise and she still doesn’t, but it really is some kind of wonderful. A few days after she appeared on my show for the second time, I got her into the studio, Resident Studios to be exact, where they film bits of X-Factor when prospect-pop-stars get cut down for not giving “110%”.

image (8)

Hettie wanted the songs she did to sound like CHVRCHES mixed with Phantogram mixed with a few other amazing bands and somehow the engineer/producer – brilliantly named Caradog – did it. We came out with 2 fully formed songs; uptempo, current pop/electro songs with a hint of folk that will hopefully amaze everyone. If you listen to Phoenix FM you will have heard both songs on my show, but all the other DJs also play No Guarantee frequently.

image (9)

Here’s what American fashion company Ingri:Dahl had to say about Hettie and her music

And here is what Resident Studios had to say about Hettie.

So I think it was the natural evolution of our collabs so far that I release something for her but it had to be special. I’ve wanted to start a tape label for a while as I have always loved the format and like Hettie, I am obsessed with all things 80s (I am going to do an even longer article on why I started this label – featuring another appearance from Injured Fox!) so it felt right that Hettie would be the first release. I don’t think Hettie will mind TOO much if I tell you that she told me she cried when she first heard her music on  cassette tape (in a good way!) because it’s a physical object that holds meaning. You can touch it, feel it, throw it across the room, but its there. It exists. It makes the music REAL instead of the song-skipping culture that exists now, as with tape you kinda have to listen to everything in one big go. Look there she is with her tapes!

And what most people don’t know is if you put a bunch of the tapes together you get a big photo of Hettie! Idea thanks to Neil Buchanan of ART ATTACK!

Now you know why the label on your tape looks like the corner of someone’s face. Thanks for supporting HETTIE and POST/POP in these early days and as you can see, I have alot of stuff happening in a very short space of time, so keep your eye on this site and especially on Hettie’s career.

If you are reading this and want her to play your gig somewhere or guest on your track or if you just want to proclaim your undying love, then hit her up on twitter!
